November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month

November 1, 2009

This is the time of the year that motivates us to continue our mission.  It is the benchmark to determine how successful we have been over the past 2 years at fulfilling what we set out to accomplish:  creating public awareness about epilepsy and helping those living with epilepsy.  Before epilepsy entered our family, we didn't have a clue.  Now, knowing what we have learned, we can't turn our back on how serious this disorder can be.  It seems to have been kept on the back burner for too long.  Epilepsy is a mystery most people do not understand, and when people don't understand, they judge.  Most people would not know what to do if they saw someone having a seizure.  Most people would not recognize a seizure, outside of the stereotypical tonic clonic (grand mal) because the signs of what to look for are not readily available.  Lives are touched and changed everyday from epilepsy.  This is our way of making the world a better place.  Join us on our journey as we change the face of epilepsy.

According to Dr. Michael R. Sperling, M.D., professor of neurology and director of the Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center in Philadelphia, The most common cause of death associated with epilepsy is “unexplained death in epilepsy” (SUDEP), which is responsible for 15% to 50% of the excess deaths in these patients.
